Chinese cloisonné offering bowls

Sangharakshita’s diary entries show he often began his day with ‘puja’. The two puja bowls on display are from a set of seven he brought to England from his vihara in Kalimpong.

‘Listened to the gramophone – Vivaldi, Elgar etc. Victor wrote and typed some letters while I went through the first four chapters of the Bodhicaryavatara which Mrs Bennett had retyped for me, selecting verses for the sevenfold puja.’

Diary, Monday 3 May 1965

‘In the afternoon sent Victor to the PO. Then went round to his flat. Listened to a few records, Wagner this time, and then transcribed in due order the verses relating to the sevenfold puja while Victor typed some letters. Dismal rainy afternoon. Looked into Toby’s “Zen Comes West”.’

Diary, Tuesday 4 May 1965

The verses selected from A.A.G. Bennet’s translation of the Bodhicaryavatara are still recited in the Sevenfold Puja in Triratna today.
